The Institute of Identity Research (IDmap) is an interdisciplinary Institute dedicated to acquire comparative data on the topic of identity. The Institute is especially interested in how the ideas of multilevel identities and their structural manifestations impact and shape people's daily lives. The Institute of Identity Research encourages the study of identity and its formation and changes through life span of a person in comparative and transnational frameworks. The Institute aims at producing engaged scholarship that rejects the false dichotomy between rigorous intellectual work and community activism and instead seeks to contribute intellectually challenging and innovative scholarship that can help people transform their thinking and their lives.
What is Identity?
Have you ever wondered what being the person you are, from one day to the next, consists of and do you know which conditions or characteristics determine who you are? These questions are what identity is all about and they form the foundation on which the IDmap project is built on. Simply put, identity can be said to be the condition or character as to who a person or what a thing is. We use the term of identity to describe an individual's comprehension of him or herself as a discrete, separate entity. This implies that the social as well as political interactions we go through play a great role in determining who we are and the orientation of our identities.
